Zone de Texte: The School

The school, an elementary school, was built in 1992 and is made out of 8 classrooms, a dining hall, a satff room, a kitchen and a large playground.

Three classes were opened in September 1992. One class was added in each of the following three years and the first students passed the official “end of elementary cycle” examination in July 1996. Two preschool classes were built in 1999 and 2000.

Presently, 230 children attend the school. For the last 10 years 166 out of 187 children passed the official “end of elementary cycle” examination (C.E.P.) with success.

School fees are a modest $15 per year. Books and school supplies are contributed by the Foundation. The European Union food program and a local supermarket allow us to provide lunch meals.

Health is monitored in connection with the Haitian Community Hospital.

After graduation, most of the children went to the Pétionville Public High School (Lycée) and the first ones who graduated in 1996 and 1997 successfully passed the High School diploma (Baccalaureat)

Pétionville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, has seen its population grow in 20 years from 30,000 to more than 300,000; there is still only one public High School which is totally overcrowded. Possibly we will face the necessity of adding a Junior High School to the School.
